What is a Root Canal?

Root Canal therapy is performed to save a tooth from extraction when it becomes diseased or is dying. More specifically, it is performed when the pulp, or inner tissue of a tooth, becomes infected or exposed. The most common reason for the tooth pulp to become compromised is a crack or fracture in a tooth, a deep cavity, or an injury to a tooth. If left untreated, it can cause severe pain, leading to a dental abscess and possible tooth loss. Unfortunately, your teeth are not able to heal themselves after disease or trauma to the nerve, which makes root canal therapy a critical dental treatment to save your teeth.

How is a Root Canal Procedure Done?

First, a local anesthetic is given. We then make an opening in the tooth. The nerve and pulp will be removed, and the inside of the tooth will be cleaned, disinfected, and sealed. The root canals are then filled with a fine rubberlike material, and then the root canal is sealed off, leaving the filling material in place. Once the inside of the tooth has been treated, your tooth will be restored to give it a healthy overall appearance.

After your procedure, your teeth may be a bit more sensitive than normal. As well, you will have to be aware that you may still have some ongoing pain or infection until the inflammation decreases. If you suffer continued pain, we ask that you call us at any time after your procedure. Our Dental Team is here to help!

Symptoms that Indicate You May Require a Root Canal

  • Pain and pressure in your teeth
  • Teeth are overly reactive to hot or cold food and beverages
  • You notice your tooth starts to darken slowly
  • Pain and tenderness in and around your gums
  • Pain from a toothache wakes you up in the middle of the night, affecting your quality of sleep
  • Tooth pain that is not relieved with over-the-counter pain medications

Saving your natural teeth is our first priority, but there are times when Root Canal Treatment is not the best treatment option. In cases where removing the tooth is the next step, we will discuss your long-term options for replacing the missing teeth, such as Dental Implants.

If you think you might benefit from root canal treatment, Grace Family Dental is here to help!
